This website is chronicling a Rural Studio Thesis Project: The
building of the Alabama Rural Heritage Center. Five
Auburn University
students are designing, renovating and constructing a 5,000 square foot
facility to be used by the center. The process began in August 2003 and
will continue till mid-2004.

Here in Thomaston we have so much of what makes small town life so
attractive: good neighbors, tree-shaded homes, a leisurely place, and
starry night skies undimmed by bright city lights...But those bright
lights have lured away many of our young people to the cities where jobs
are. At the Alabama Rural Heritage Center we are attempting to grow our
own industry by helping to develop products that can be created in rural
Alabama, and by finding markets for those products.
The mission of the Rural Studio is to enable each participating
student to cross the threshold of misconceived opinions to
create/design/build and to allow students to put their educational
values to work as citizens of a community. The Rural Studio seeks solutions
to the needs of the community within the community's own context, not
from outside it.
